A Message from the Rector
Good News and bad news!
Im sure you have all heard of the death of David Self who did so much to champion the cause of St. Andrews Church. He was laid to rest in St Andrews churchyard on the 30th June by The Revd Canon Roger Royle.
I have been here for just over eleven years now and every year when I am asked to write a piece for your newsletter I have to tell you that although there is hope, there is no news. This year is different as I am sure you are all aware; just before Christmas 2007 we received the good news from English Heritage that our grant application had been successful and that we would receive a total of £170,000. The full cost will be around £243,000. We had made the application to replace the asbestos on the roof of the nave, to do some work on the West & East window and carry out some remedial work on the porch of St. Andrews Church.
The first phase of the work was to be finished by the end of June this year and I can tell you that has been completed. The first phase was to erect scaffolding on the two sides of the eastern nave where it joined with the tower, both inside and outside of the church (for photos see the St. Andrews church section on our website
http://www.upperwaveneybenefice.com/
Two sections of the roof were to be removed and examined underneath and the woodwork under the sections to be inspected. The windows and the clerestory windows were to be inspected by our architect, Mr. David Lemon, and an English Heritage Historian. The initial reports of the inspection were favourable, although we await the full report from Mr. Lemon. The work was completed and the scaffolding has since been removed.
The next phase is for the nave to be clad in scaffolding both inside and out and a covering placed over the roof and the work to begin. This cannot start until September because of the bats and unlikely to start until spring of next year. We are still waiting for planning permission to replace the roof with Westmorland tiles and we still have to raise some money, probably about £30,000, although the exact figure wont be known until we get detailed reports of the roof back and it may depend on what we find when the whole roof is removed.
So at last I have good news to tell you; but we could not have got to this position without your help and we will need your continued support to see this project completed. On behalf of all the worshipping community and the PCC of St. Andrews Church can I thank you all for your continued support.
Your Servant in Christ

St Andrews Architecture
Extracts quoted from architectural historians, recorded in our earlier bulletins, confirm St Andrews Church has the most powerful Norman tower of any Norfolk parish church, probably built no later than 1120 and gifted to the monks of Thetford by the Bigod family. As well as commenting on the building style, Pevsner and others also mention the 15th c benches decorated with a variety of figures, including strange animals. Parish churches are England 's glory and are public monuments which we need to preserve for future generations.
