THE DEATH OF A PERSON OR FUNERALS

If a person has just died or you are not certain whether the person has died an Ambulance or Doctor should be called immediately.

In the case of a death in the home. In the first instance a Doctor (normally the person's GP) will have to be called to certify death and in some circumstances for example in a sudden or suspicious death the Police may have to be notified who will then contact The Coroner's Officer.
A Doctor may not be able to sign a Death Certificate in the following circumstances:
  • The deceased was not attended by a doctor during their last illness or the Doctor has not seen the deceased within the 14 days before death
  • The death was violent or unnatural or occurred under suspicious circumstances
  • The cause of death is not known or is uncertain
  • The death occurred while the deceased was undergoing an operation or did not recover from the anaesthetic
  • The death was caused by an industrial disease
  • The death occurred in Police custody
Under no circumstances should the deceased be moved until either a Doctor or Policeman has attended and given their permission.

Remember that a Doctor or GP may not be able to attend immediately because of Surgeries etc. and in some cases a Paramedic may attend in the first instance to confirm that death has occurred.

Once permission has been given then a Funeral Director may be contacted to come and remove the deceased.

You may also want to call your minister to give support to you at this time.

These are the three main Funeral Directors that operate in our parishes there are others and their details can be found in Yellow Pages or The Telephone Directory.
